Fitzhugh Ellsworth Wallace, Jr. was a prominent attorney in the Kinston law firm of Wallace, Morris, Barwick, Landis & Stroud, P.A. Wallace was born in Kenansville on February 6, 1917, the son of the late Fitzhugh E. Wallace, Sr. and Erwin Carter Wallace.
In 1918, the family moved to Kinston, after being the last family to reside in “Liberty Hall” in Kenansville. Wallace was educated in the local public schools until he graduated from Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. After combat duty in World War II, he graduated from the Wake Forest School of Law.
During World War II, Wallace served as First Lieutenant for F Company, 311th Regiment, 78th Infantry Division. Wallace earned a Bronze Star for his bravery in battle and finished his duty in Berlin with the U.S. Occupation forces.
Wallace practiced law in Kinston for fifty years, initially with his father, F. E. Wallace, Sr., who was former president of the North Carolina Bar Association and then as senior partner at Wallace, Morris, Barwick, Landis & Stroud, P.A. He was a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and served on the organization’s Board of Governors. He was Chairman of the Lenoir County Board of Elections and was city attorney for Kinston for fourteen years. Wallace was a lifetime Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Kinston. He also served on the first Board of Trustees at Arendell Parrott Academy.
Wallace retired from the practice of law in 1994 and lived in Morehead City, North Carolina until his death in 2006.
